Best foil insulation: what the certificates say

There is no best multifoil, only the best certified build-up for your roof. Here is how the brands compare on the things that matter.

How we compared them

Four criteria: third-party certification and the build-up it assumes; declared thermal resistance with air gaps; the tape and fixing system; and price per square metre at UK merchants. We do not score “quality” — every product here is certified for its stated use. Brand-specific figures change; we give the pattern and tell you to read the current certificate.

Brand / productTypeTypical certified useNotes
SuperFOIL SF19 / SF40 / SF60Multifoil, breathable variants availableRoofs, walls, floors; SF40+ for higher-resistance roof build-upsLarge range; approved installer network; product-specific tape
SOPREMA SuperQuilt (previously YBS)MultifoilRoofs, walls, floors; often combined with PIRLong-standing UK product, now under SOPREMA UK; widely stocked
Actis Triso / HybrisMultifoil and hybrid honeycombRoofs and walls; Hybris as a thicker alternativeSystem approach with matching breather and VCL products

The decision, by roof

  • Loft room, tiles staying on: any certified multifoil across the rafters, usually with 50mm PIR between. Choose on price and installer familiarity.
  • Roof being re-covered: a breathable multifoil that doubles as the membrane can save a layer.
  • Floor between joists: a standard multifoil draped and stapled; brand matters little.
  • Garage or shed: the cheapest product that will stay up.
Pick the build-up, then the brand

We tell you what your roof needs. The installer quotes the product that meets it.

What to ignore

“Equivalent to 200mm of mineral wool” claims without a certificate reference. Reviews from people who fitted it in a shed and were pleased it was shiny. Any product whose data sheet does not state the air gaps its performance assumes.

Questions homeowners ask

Is SuperFOIL better than SuperQuilt?
They are close competitors with similar certified applications. See our head-to-head. Choose on the certified build-up for your roof, stock availability and installer experience.
Which foil insulation has the highest R-value?
Thicker multifoils such as SuperFOIL SF60 or Actis Hybris claim the highest standalone resistance. Always read the tested build-up: the air gaps and any PIR are part of the number.
