Mill-town slate and old felt
Terraces on steep slate roofs with decades-old felt or none, solid walls and the country's highest rainfall: ventilation and timber moisture are checked before any insulation is discussed, and the survey often stops there first.
Why foil may suit some homes here
Terraces with 75–100mm rafters and slate roofs cannot take deep board without losing the room; multifoil under the rafters is the usual investigation. The decision rests on the whole roof build-up — rafter depth, ventilation, moisture, existing insulation and intended use — not on material thickness alone. Foil insulation guide.
Why foil may not suit others
A damp-stained mill-town roof is not insulated by anyone until the cause is found; the survey stops there first. A straightforward cold loft with good access is often more appropriately upgraded with conventional mineral-wool loft insulation than a rafter-level foil system, and we say so when it is.
