Short answer
SuperFOIL is a UK multifoil range — SF6, SF19+, SF40 and SF60, plus breathable and bubble variants — of reflective layers and wadding with an integrated vapour control layer, third-party assessed for roofs, walls and floors when installed with the specified air spaces. SF19+ is the mainstream product; SF40 and SF60 are thicker, higher-resistance quilts.

The manufacturer publishes system R-values for each product in roof, wall and floor applications with its specified air spaces and suggests batten sizes that increase with product thickness. Those figures, the KIWA BDA certificate and the declarations of performance are the numbers to use in a calculation — not the packaging comparisons. How the numbers combine.
SuperFOIL SF6
A six-layer, ≈6mm reflective quilt. Its core resistance is small, so it is a radiant barrier and draught layer rather than a primary insulation: outbuildings, behind radiators, an extra reflective layer over loft wool under boarding. Treat it as you would bubble foil, not as a rafter product.
SuperFOIL SF19+
The mainstream product: 11 layers, ≈45mm, KIWA BDA certified, sold as a 3-in-1 (insulation, vapour control layer, radiant barrier). Under the rafters with ≈25mm battens it is the standard room-in-roof detail; with 50mm PIR between the rafters it is the usual route to a 0.18 target. Roll sizes 1.2m or 1.5m by 10m. SuperFOIL SF40
37 layers, ≈65mm, for higher targets where the rafters or joists can take the thicker quilt and the larger batten (the manufacturer suggests ≈38mm). The manufacturer offers bespoke U-value and condensation-risk calculations for SF40 build-ups; use them rather than the comparative “equivalent to X mm of wool” statements, which are internal assessments for specific constructions.
SuperFOIL SF60
53 layers, ≈100mm, the highest-resistance quilt in the range, with a ≈60mm batten suggestion and an 8m roll. It is a floor and deep-rafter product more than a headroom-saver; where 100mm of quilt plus battens fits, board may fit too, so the choice is made on the calculation and the geometry.
SuperFOIL breathable products
The range includes a breathable variant marketed for use over the rafters as an insulating breather membrane (SF19BB in the manufacturer's literature). That is the same role as TLX Gold: cold side, vapour-open, fitted when the covering is off. Do not confuse it with the standard vapour-resistant quilts, which belong on the warm side.
SuperFOIL bubble foil
A foil bubble product (SFBA) sits alongside the multifoils for shed, garage and radiator use. It is a radiant barrier with a small core resistance and is not a substitute for the multifoils in a heated room. Bubble foil guide.
SuperFOIL costs
Material only, at retail: roughly £15–£30 per m² for SF19+, more for SF40 and SF60. Installed under rafters in a typical build-up, £45–£80 per m²; with PIR between, £60–£110 per m². SuperFOIL installation
Under the rafters: roll across, tension, staple every 100–150mm, overlap and tape every joint with the manufacturer's tape, batten to form the room-side air space, keep the ventilation path above. SuperFOIL reviews and considerations
- Broad, current third-party assessment and detailed technical support are real strengths.
- Standard quilts use metallised film outer layers; SOPREMA markets true-aluminium outers on SuperQuilt as a fire and reflectivity advantage. Judge on the declared class and emissivity for the product, not the brochure.
- System performance depends on forming the specified air spaces; larger battens for SF40 and SF60 eat headroom.
- SF6 is not primary insulation.
SuperFOIL vs alternatives
